Midjourney Prompt: a realistic image of a person writing in an attic looking out a window daydreaming of their life in 10 years. out the window, in the clouds, they can see a preview of their future life
Imagine your life in 10 years.
Where do you see yourself professionally?
Reflect on your career path. What kind of work would you like to be doing? Do you see yourself in the same industry or a different one? What position or role do you hold? Are you working for someone else or running your own business? Try to picture your professional life as vividly as possible.
What does your personal life look like?
Consider your relationships, hobbies, and personal pursuits. Are you surrounded by family or living solo? Have you cultivated strong friendships and community ties? What hobbies or passions are you pursuing? Are you living in a city, the countryside, or somewhere else?
How have you grown as a person?
Personal development is a crucial part of life. In what ways have you grown mentally, emotionally, and spiritually? What skills have you acquired? How have your values and beliefs evolved? Have you become the person you aspire to be?
Come back from the land of imagination.
The reason why people have a gap between what they imagine and their current reality is that they do not make decisions that are based on their personal values and priorities.
Rather, they chase what’s trendy.
They seek a societal ideal that doesn’t exist.
The most effective decisions are those that align with your core beliefs and goals, rather than simply seeking to balance every aspect of your life equally.
It's about understanding what matters most to you and using that as a compass for your decisions and actions. In this sense, balance isn't about juggling all aspects of life equally, but rather about aligning actions with personal values.
Here are 5 steps to values-based decision-making:
1. Identify Core Values
Your core values are the bedrock of your leadership and the ethos of your company. These values could include concepts like innovation, integrity, resilience, or customer satisfaction.
The first step is to identify these values.
Spend time reflecting on what you genuinely believe is important, not just in business, but also in life. Write these values down, define what they mean to you, and articulate how they influence your work.
2. Prioritize Values
Not all values carry equal weight. Some will be more crucial to your entrepreneurial identity and your business's mission. Prioritize your values, listing them in order of their importance to you and your enterprise.
Prioritizing helps when there are conflicts between values.
For example, a decision may favor innovation but compromise short-term profitability. Knowing which value is more critical to you can guide you to a decision that you will be content with.
4. Aligning Decisions with Values
Use your prioritized values as a compass for all your decision-making processes. This alignment should permeate every level of your business, from high-level strategic planning down to everyday operational choices.
For every decision, ask yourself:
"Does this align with my core values?"
If the answer is no, it may be worth reconsidering the decision.
5. Regular Review
As your business grows and evolves, your values may also need to evolve. Regularly reviewing and reassessing your values ensures that they remain relevant and aligned with your business's direction.
Set aside time, perhaps quarterly or bi-annually, to revisit your values and make necessary adjustments.
6. Living the Values
Values are not just for decision-making. They should permeate every aspect of your work and life. Strive to embody your values in all your actions and interactions, not just in business decisions.
Aim to instill these values in your company culture.
From onboarding new team members to client interactions, your values should be palpable. This approach not only helps you maintain personal alignment but can also inspire your team, foster a stronger company culture, and build a more resonant brand in the eyes of customers.
It’s easy to get caught up in fictional ideals that are wrapped in someone else’s truth. Ideals force us to strive for realities that aren’t obtainable.
Rather than seeking external balance, seek internal balance.
The more you can be aware of your own values, the better you can find congruence between your values and actions.
And, even, you’ll land exactly where you imagine in 10 years.
