Five Tactics Every Startup Founder Must Know

Creativity is not just a nice-to-have but a must-have quality for startup founders.

It's an essential tool that can mean the difference between the success and failure of a startup.

It shows up in all aspects of your business:

  • Product Development: Create innovative products or services

  • Problem-Solving: Develop unique solutions to complex challenges

  • Marketing and Branding: Stand out in a crowded market

  • Resource Management: Use limited resources effectively

  • Business Model Creation: Develop unique business models that provide a competitive edge

  • Team Building and Leadership: Develop unique business models that provide a competitive edge

Being creative is essential for startups to break through, disrupt industries, and come up with new product ideas.

But how do you unlock your innate creativity, especially under the stress of running a company?

Here are 5 tactics I've seen work for startup founders:

1. Get out of your comfort zone

Your brain needs novel inputs to make new neural connections and spark creativity. Take a different route to work, listen to a genre of music you've never tried before, or try cooking a cuisine from another culture.

2. Challenge your assumptions

Most of us have mental models ingrained from past experiences that limit our thinking. Practice thinking:

"What if that wasn't true?"

"How could I see this differently?"

This helps you break free from traditional assumptions.

3. Brainstorm with diverse groups

You'll get the most divergent and creative ideas by brainstorming with people from different backgrounds and expertise.

Include:

  • Team members

  • Customers

  • Even people outside your industry in ideation sessions.

"The value of an idea lies in the using of it."

- Thomas Edison, General Electric Co-founder

4. Take a break from work

Take a break from work.

Stepping away and giving your conscious mind a rest enables unconscious ideas to percolate up.

  • Take walks outside

  • Meditate

  • Indulge in a hobby completely unrelated to your work

You’ll be surprised how rapidly new ideas surface or new connections get formed.

5. Practice mindfulness

Simple mindfulness techniques like focusing on your breath or paying attention to sensations can train your mind to be more present.

This attentiveness helps you notice creative sparks in everyday life.

Try incorporating one or more of these tactics into your weekly routine.

You'll be surprised at how small changes can unleash creative ideas that fuel your startup's long term success.
