The Power of the Right Type of Feedback

The Surprising Impact of Feedback on Growth and Innovation

Being open to ideas that challenge your beliefs is essential to reach new heights.

If you're curious enough, this can be daily.

Whether it be in a brainstorming session, during a customer call, or overheard in a coffee shop.

Someone suggests an idea that challenges your conventional beliefs about your startup.

Recall the last time this happened.

Who was it from?
Where were you?
How was it delivered?
How did you respond?

When experiencing any type of feedback, it first presents itself as a sensation.

Your palms get clammy.
You get a density in your stomach.
Your heart swells.

With a low level of awareness of the sensations at play, you react. You take action without realizing your experience. You dismiss the idea or become defensive.

As a founder, you set the tone of collaboration. You set the tone for safe feedback. There is a direct correlation between quality feedback, growth, and innovation.

First, is being aware of your internal state.
The second is being intentional around three key feedback types.

  1. Appreciation

  2. Coaching

  3. Evaluation

As a founder, your words carry immense weight. It’s vital to give the right feedback at the right time.

Diving into the internal state is for another time. Let's unpack how you can use these three feedback types to help you and your team flourish.

Appreciation

It's vital to recognize the value of appreciation. Appreciation is the fabric of a positive work environment. It also boosts motivation and engagement among your team.

When you thank employees with sincerity, it shows. You value their hard work and achievements. They understand their efforts make a difference. This acknowledgment helps create belonging. It's crucial for a healthy team culture.

Be specific with your praise. Highlight particular actions or outcomes that impressed you. This tailored approach resonates with your team and reinforces their sense of purpose. It has a ripple effect and will compound into future behavior.

Coaching

You are the springboard for your team to grow. This is where coaching comes into play.

Provide guidance, support, and insights to help your team achieve its goals. Effective coaching helps your team enhance its skills and knowledge.

Identify areas for growth.
Offer actionable suggestions.

As a coach, you don't need to have all the answers; rather, it's essential to ask the right questions. Doing so instills ownership and confidence in your team members.

Cultivate skills like active listening, empathy, and patience. Gradually, this approach helps them unlock their full potential. They'll start to feel supported. You'll work together to face challenges and achieve shared goals.

Remember, though, coaching isn't only about giving advice. Effective coaching creates a collaborative environment. It's a safe space. It's where your team is comfortable. They can discuss their concerns, ask questions, and seek feedback.

Evaluation

Evaluation allows your team to understand where they stand and what's expected. It provides the opportunity for reflection and change. It helps you align individual and team goals with the broader objectives of your company.

Regular evaluations pinpoint team strengths and weaknesses. You can then allocate resources effectively and optimize performance.

They also give your team insights into their progress and areas for development. This fosters a culture of a growth mindset and continuous improvement.

There’s no right cadence for feedback. Rather, it’s determining what’s best for your team.

As you conduct evaluations, be transparent and constructive in your feedback. This empowers them to take ownership of their professional growth.

Remember, your words hold weight.

If done without intentionality, your feedback can result in a new team and weeks of work. When in your mind, that comment was a "nice to have."

Appreciation, coaching, and evaluation set the foundation for a feedback-rich environment. Staying ahead of the curve in the fast-paced world of startups is ever more important. The need for consistent learning and evolution is a must.

Embracing these three modes puts you and your team in the best possible position to:

  • Boost team performance.

  • Face challenges.

  • Become an industry leader.
