Welcome to The Entrepreneur’s Edge, weekly insights on AI and peak performance to shape the future of entrepreneurship.
As the whirlwind of the OpenAI story finally settles, it's time to take a deep breath. This was more than just a frenzy of Twitter updates; it disrupted routines and shaved hours off our sleep. Reflecting on this, the CEO of EightSleep shared an insightful tweet that hits home for many of us.
Breaking news: The OpenAI drama is real.
We checked our data and last night, SF saw a spike in low-quality sleep. There was a 27% increase in people getting under 5 hours of sleep. We need to fix this.

But here's the catch: As founders, we're constantly caught in the crossfire of unpredictability and high stakes. So, mastering the art of restful sleep becomes not just a necessity but a superpower.
Solid sleep is the unsung hero for peak performers, especially when the ground beneath us seems to shift continuously. We'll explore how, even amidst heightened uncertainty and relentless innovation, a good night's sleep remains your best ally in maintaining clarity, resilience, and cutting-edge advantage.
Let’s dive in:
1. Enhance Cognitive Function and Physical Health
Sleep is not just a break from daily activities; it's a critical period for brain and body rejuvenation. The Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 2017 emphasized the significance of circadian rhythms in regulating our behavior, hormone levels, metabolism, and sleep patterns. Regular, adequate sleep can improve cognitive functions and may even contribute to weight management.
For peak-performing founders, this means recognizing the role of sleep in maintaining optimal performance and health. It's essential to monitor and adjust sleep habits, especially if you're reliant on stimulants like caffeine, to stay alert.
For me getting life’s basics right was a powerful starting place to address depression. Make sleep your #1 priority. Exercise daily. Eat good foods. Try to stop the vice that makes you feel the most miserable. Wishing you the best friend.

2. Boost Cellular Rejuvenation and Mental Clarity
During sleep, our bodies work tirelessly to rebuild damaged tissues and replenish cells, particularly at the mitochondrial level. Inconsistent sleep patterns can lead to various issues, including brain fog, moodiness, and increased risk of serious health conditions like diabetes and heart disease.
For founders, ensuring a consistent sleep schedule is vital to maintain a healthy circadian rhythm and avoid these negative outcomes. This involves going to bed and waking up at the same time every day, even on weekends, to maintain a stable and healthy sleep cycle.
3. Ensure Sufficient and Restorative Sleep
The right amount of sleep is crucial for everyone, especially for those at the helm of businesses. Adults typically need between seven to nine hours of sleep. Good sleep quality is characterized by falling asleep within 15-20 minutes of lying down and waking up feeling refreshed. It's also important to ensure that sleep is undisturbed by issues like snoring or restlessness.
For founders, this means assessing their sleep quality and making necessary adjustments to ensure they are getting restorative sleep, which is fundamental for remaining alert and productive throughout the day.
Top habits for better sleep:
- Blue light filter on all screens (f.lux)
- 10-30 minute walk after dinner
- Breath exercises
- Take Magnesium Threonate and/or Inositol
- Listen to 528 Hz frequency
- Make your room as dark as possible
- No devices in your roomEnjoy the slumber.

4. Adopt Healthy Sleep Habits
Prioritizing sleep is as important as maintaining a healthy diet and regular exercise. This includes establishing a relaxing bedtime routine, ensuring the sleep environment is conducive to rest, and avoiding stimulants and heavy meals before bedtime. Regular exercise, although beneficial, should be timed appropriately to not interfere with sleep.
Founders should also consider the impact of electronic devices on sleep quality and try to minimize their use before bed. By adopting these healthy sleep habits, founders can significantly enhance their ability to perform at their peak, even in challenging times.
As we navigate the rapid acceleration of innovation and uncertainty, the role of sleep in maintaining peak performance for founders cannot be overstated. The journey through the nuances of sleep we've embarked upon underscores its profound impact on cognitive function, physical health, mental clarity, and overall well-being. Embracing the discipline of consistent, restorative sleep practices is more than a necessity; it's a strategic asset in the arsenal of every successful founder.
By prioritizing sleep, we not only enhance our health and resilience but also sharpen the very tools – clarity, creativity, and stamina – that drive us towards groundbreaking achievements and sustainable success. Let this be a reminder that in the midst of our pursuits, the power of a good night's sleep remains an invaluable component of extraordinary leadership and innovation.
See you next week,
Rachel
